In a music scene that’s frequently clogged with one-shot wonders, there’s something to be said for not cutting corners. The results may not come overnight, but the rewards are greater – which has characterized Nonpoint’s approach from day one.
They’ve sold 800,000 albums in North America, toured with the likes of All That Remains, Papa Roach, and Sevendust, and appeared at major live events like OzzFEST, and Rock On The Range – yet you may not have always realized it.
Drummer Robb Rivera tackled this issue (“Why isn’t Nonpoint a bigger band?”) last June, through a blog posting on the band’s website.
“All I can honestly say (is) that (lead vocalist) Elias (Soriano) and myself are blessed to still be able to call this our everyday job,” said Rivera, in part. “Neither of us had no idea that we would last this long. We are just going to do what we always do and that is to work as hard as we can and move forward.”
Soriano voices an unapologetic old school attitude of his own. “I want everybody to feel like they got a complete record from beginning to end.  I want them to walk away with something substantial and true that they can hopefully come back to,” he said.
Fitting statements, indeed, since Rivera and Soriano are the two remaining original members from 1997, when the band started in Fort Lauderdale, FL.  Guitarists B.C. Kochmit and Rasheed Thomas round out the current lineup, along with bassist Adam Woloszyn.
Nonpoint are continuing to tour on the back of its eighth album, The Return (2014), which entered theBillboard charts at #38 – marking their best chart position yet. (Local fans, take note: the South Bend date happens a week before the band heads right over to Europe for a two-month tour there.)
Some of the credit can likely be chalked up to “Breaking Skin,” which incorporated a more polished production ethic to Nonpoint’s trademark rumble.
Rivera expresses satisfaction with the results.  “There’s a lot of melody, but it’s still so heavy,” said the drummer, on the band’s official biography.  “That heaviness has always been in the back of our minds. It’s a natural direction for us. Most bands soften their sound as they go on. We get more aggressive and heavy. That’s what Nonpoint does best.”
The Return also marked the band’s second collaboration with producer Johnny K (Disturbed, Megadeth, Sevendust, Staind), whom Rivera describes as “like the sixth member of our band at this point!”
“He works us, and he pulls no punches.  It was such a natural thing that we only needed to track for three weeks. Johnny understands the band and what we are, and he encourages us to be ourselves,” said Rivera.
Sustaining the original intensity over a career that’s run nearly 20 years is no easy task. However, if Nonpoint has a secret, it boils down to self-reliance – which means winning the world over, one fan at a time – and keeping a backup plan for emergencies, as Rivera notes on his blog.
“That’s just how the biz goes. If you plan for the worst, you will be prepared against most surprises. Your show will still get promoted, even if it’s only you,” said Rivera. “The alternative when relying on everyone else? No promotion occurs, and you have zero people at your show.”
However, that scenario’s unlikely to happen on Nonpoint’s watch.
