Ah, New Year's Eve. The one day a year where it's actually socially acceptable to get completely trashed while simultaneously making far-fetched promises to yourself that you know damn well you can't keep. On any other day of the calendar, this would be considered alcoholism, mixed with a splash of denial.
What was your resolution last year? To quit smoking? To cut out fast food? Whatever the resolution---chances are, you failed miserably at pulling through. But what if you could go back?
Picture it: it's 11:55 p.m., December 31st, 2014. You're at a house party with friends, new and old (and probably some random people you can't remember). You're rushing to select a promise that you can genuinely make good on. As you watch the clock tick towards midnight, you're excited! You're thinking, "Hell yeah! I can do this!"
Well, I'm here to tell you that you probably CAN'T do this. Unless, that is, your resolution was to have a killer night the next time this holiday rolls around.
My friends, I'm here to help. Here are some of your options in Michiana this year. God speed.
105 WEST COLFAX AVENUE, SOUTH BEND, INDIANA
Gotta start with a classic. If you want to feel super fancy for a night, this is the way to go. Big band, champagne, dinner, the whole nine. It’s crazy nice. But, nice comes at a price, right? Tickets are $100 a pop, which isn’t unreasonable for a night of this caliber.
TICKETS—MORRIS TICKET OUTLET (EDDY ST.) AND ONLINE
222 SOUTH MICHIGAN STREET, SOUTH BEND, INDIANA
Well that escalated quickly. Employees say the place will be packed with DJs, including DJ Breeze. There will be hors d’oeuvres, a balloon drop and champagne accompanied by a video countdown until the clock strikes midnight. Fun starts at 9 p.m. Club Fever is a huuuuge club. Like, really big. Good for a night out with a large group of friends.
100 NORTH CENTER STREET, MISHAWAKA, INDIANA
SMOKESTACK BREW: For those of you who’d rather drink beer than champagne. Blammo will be playing. Tickets range anywhere from $20 to $300—but, dinner is included in some packages. Smokestack Brew is a newly-opened joint in Mishawaka that pours its own beers but has plenty more on tap—there’s something for everyone.
110 NORTH MAIN STREET, SOUTH BEND, INDIANA
Live music until the ball drops at the DTSB location.
BLUE GATE THEATRE
175 NORTH VAN BUREN STREET, SHIPSHEWANA, INDIANA
Hold your judgment. New Year’s Eve—at an Amish restaurant? Yes. A viable option if you want to actually remember your holiday. Special dinner and live music from more than four groups. Tickets cost around $89, but if you can believe it, a lot of them have sold already. There’s a two shows that Thursday, one in the afternoon and one in the evening.
TICKETS—ONLINE, IN HOUSE
HILTON GARDEN INN BALLROOM
1300 CINEMA WAY, BENTON HARBOR, MICHIGAN
If you’re looking to spend the night with your significant other, this might be a good option. For $250, you get a guestroom for two with a bottle of bubbly, for starters. If you don’t want the room, you can still crash the party for $150 per couple. With that price, you also get to hit up the prime rib and crab leg buffet at the party in the ballroom. There will be live music from the Janet Hines-Norris and band starting at 9 p.m. and lasting through 1 a.m. Dancing is encouraged. This year’s theme is Hollywood!
FOUR WINDS CASINO
11111 WILSON ROAD, NEW BUFFALO, MICHIGAN
58700 M-51, DOWAGIAC, MICHIGAN
68600 RED ARROW HIGHWAY, HARTFORD, MICHIGAN
Spending New Year’s Eve at a casino seems like a really baller move. There’s going to be tons of stuff to turn the place into a huge party. The fun starts at noon with cash drawings (yes) and other giveaways. There will be entertainment at the New Buffalo casino, too. Sushi Roll is coming to play—that show starts at 10:30. Party goes all night. If you’ve ever been to a Four Winds Casino, just imagine the New Year’s Eve party being like, a normal night at the casino x1000.
BLUE CHIP CASINO
777 BLUE CHIP DRIVE, MICHIGAN CITY, INDIANA
Same rings true: Ringing in the new year at a giant gambling warehouse is probably the coolest and most entertaining option you’ve got. There will be live music all night at several of the casino’s spin-off venues, but Radio Tokyo is playing inside It’s Vegas Baby for the big bash. There’s a $20 cover charge for the holiday.
610 COLFAX AVENUE, LA PORTE, INDIANA
This place always delivers on New Year’s Eve. Just like last year, there will be another NYE party featuring Point’n Fingers. Bowling? Music? Party. Everything kicks off at 9 p.m.
Now that your options are laid out, you have no excuse but to live it up this NYE. Put on your fancy pants and hit the town.
And remember, plan your resolution responsibly. There's nothing worse than waking up hungover on the first day of the year, hitting the drive-thru and scarfing down all the grease you can while suddenly realizing that you drunkenly swore to a room full of people that you were giving up French fries for the next 365 days.
Don't be that guy.
